Bloodstone is a variety of jasper, and is also one of the March birthstones. As a traditional birthstone for March it has been a popular stone since antiquity. In ancient times it would have been called heliotrope, or “sun stone”. It was thought to bestow the wearer with healing properties.
Using Bloodstones in Jewellery
To be set in jewellery, bloodstones may be cut into the various common shapes like emerald, cabochon, octagonal, round and oval cuts. A good stone has a darker green colour and very visible red spots or veins.
A green gemstone with red spots of hematite, bloodstones are found in Brazil, Australia, the United States, India and other parts of Asia.
