As if this 10.10 carat fancy vivid blue diamond wasn’t enough for Sotheby’s this month. The famous auction house has announced another stellar blue diamond to add to the recent frenzied demand for fancy coloured diamonds – the Shirley Temple Blue diamond.
This 9.54-carat cushion-shaped VVS2 clarity Fancy Deep Blue diamond will hit the block in New York as the centrepiece of the Magnificent Jewels sale on April 19th.
In 1940, Shirley Temple’s father originally purchased the ring for $7,210 (about $150,000 today) for her 12th birthday. The ring was in Temple’s collection until she passed away in 2014, and is anticipated to sell for $33 and $46 million (Canadian) at auction.
“It’s a privileged occasion when we are entrusted with a stone of such exceptional quality and rarity. It’s rarer still that a stone would tell as compelling a story as The Shirley Temple Blue. Shirley Temple helped to lift America’s spirits out of the Great Depression, and served her country in many capacities throughout the remainder of her life.”
– Frank Everett, Sales Director of Sotheby’s Jewelry Department in New York
We wouldn’t mind getting our hands on a stone like this. What do you think?
